Managing Your Child's Eczema
It can be upsetting to see your child suffering with eczema. Many parents feel anxious about it. There's no need to feel helpless since there are many things you can do to help your child. Most important, you can learn about the disease and how to manage it.
Here are some helpful facts:
- Eczema is especially common in babies and children under 5. As a result, there is plenty of support available for parents
- While family history plays a role, experts believe that childhood eczema has increased recently because of environmental triggers
- The disease may improve—even disappear—as the child gets older
Careful management can make the difference
It's important to work closely with your pediatrician. He or she can determine the right treatment for your child. Careful bathing and moisturizing are also important. Give lukewarm, not hot, baths and use a soap-free cleanser or body wash. Pat your child's skin dry or let it air dry. Keep the skin moist. Use creams and lotions often, including right after bathing.
You can also:
- Stop your child from rubbing or scratching
- Distract your child from scratching with toys and games
- Keep your child's fingernails short
- Dress him or her in soft cotton clothes
- Keep your child cool: overheating can make skin itchier
- Keep your child away from things that could irritate the skin or cause allergic reactions
